2004-2005 Duke's Lacrosse Club News

History
2005-06

[October 12th - 2005 Season Wrap up]  To All Players, Coaches, Parents & Friends of Duke's Lacrosse Club,

As we get ready to Begin another Lacrosse Year with our Schedule of High School All-Star Off season Tournaments, I wanted to take a moment to send out a General Communication to bring Everyone up to date on how we finished the Summer and what will be going on with our Duke's Lacrosse Club heading into this Fall and Winter Offseason . Let me try and give this a little order with so much to communicate.

First, we lost in the Championship at Champ Camp for the second year in a Row. Losing is never pleasant but our players worked hard and once again, we were one of the last two teams standing and playing in the Championship that had 64 Teams entered in this Prestigious National Tournament. Our Strong showing was rewarded by College coaches who are aggressively pursueing our entire roster of players. Ken Clausen on defense and Jack Forster on Offense were MVP's with many other strong Performances turned in by our players. Also see our Duke's Website Link @ .: Duke's Lacrosse Club [ Alumni ] :. to see where our current Senior Class of players is committing to College as well as where past players have matriculated. We will continue to update this List as more players make their College Selections.

Next, the Duke's Adult Summer League Team lost in the Championship for the Third year in a row by a tight 9-10 Score but acquitted themselves very well against a loaded GMH Team that acts as a Feeder/Farm Team for the Major Lacrosse League's ( MLL )Local Entry, the Barrage. Many players Stood out All summer for Duke's but the Best Group of players was easily the LSM's led by Matt Rankin,Matt Moyer, Dan Corcoran, PT Ricci, Charles Barnes & Mike Avato et al . Other players deserving mention included Greg Gurenlian who was a Beast on Faceoffs and combined on the Potent PSU Line with Andrew Mackrides and Chris Gannett. Ryan Rohde stood out on Attack and Chris Fallon was stellar on defense while Captaining a talented, Young Defense. In Goal, Drew Adams and Matt McMonagle were their usual Outstanding selves and it just wouldn't be an Adult Summer Team without Dan Woods out there Busting his Hump. We missed a few players this Summer who we hope will be back with us next year because the Adult Team is Invaluable in Renewing and Maintaining Friendships among Duke's players past and present. The other Major Benefit with the Adult Team and maybe even more important is its Development of our Young High School Players who come out in the Summer and gain so much Experience by Rubbing shoulders with the Adult Players and stepping up and playing against College and Professional Lacrosse Players. Overall, a Great Adult Summer and a special thanx to Jason Christmas for Coaching the Defense and to Dave Young for always being our #1 Supporter.

To End Our Summer Season , we took a mix and match Team of players to the NDP Tournament in Malvern that allowed Non-Champ Camp Players to get some much needed Tournament Experience. Unfortunately, College Coaches pretty much Boycotted this National Developmental Tournament run by Gary Gait but the Duke's Team went 5-1 and found some New talent to join the Master Roster and hopefully Compete for Champ Camp Roster Spots in the Summer of 2006. Kyle Wharton was MVP for both the Tournament and for Duke's as he was Simply Exceptional . Other players making All Tournament and Standing out for Duke's were Ryan Morrell on attack, Matt Dolente & John Kuderka as Faceoff D-middies & Kevin Devenney as a LSM. Note : Ken Clausen & Reed Phillips participated with the Canadien Team, The Ottawa Nemesis. Kenny was Incredible even though he was really dragging tail coming off of a long Lacrosse Summer and a Champ Camp/Adult Championship week right before this Tournament.

Okay, that brings us to Current Business and our Off-Season High School All-Star Schedule of Tournaments and activities. Let me continue to keep some semblance of order here as well in communicating everything we need to talk about.
1) We have another class of Frosh getting ready to join us and we hope to have All of our Invitation letters completed and out to them shortly so we can have a General Meeting to Greet these players and Orient both them and their Parents with the Duke's Lacrosse Club. At the same time, a number of older--"Top of the Age" players are joining the Roster( Dolente, Kuderka & Devenney plus others from NDP) and at the same time, there is another group of players participating in Tryouts to make the Duke's Roster so our Overall Master Roster is expanding and there will be New faces coming to All of our Tournaments.
2) Whether you are a New player or an Older Top of the Age Player, you must Complete your INDIVIDUAL PLAYER BIO in FULL so Take the Time to Update it completely. Our webmaster, Mr. Spahr puts a lot of time and Effort into the Website and how you complete Your Bio is both a Reflection of you and our Organization so please don't take it lightly. Players not completing their Bio's in FULL will be Removed from the Master Roster so be advised we take the Completion of the Bio very seriously. With over 500,000 Hits to the Website, College coaches are certainly Reviewing your Bio's so do them right and check your Spelling.
3) Please look over the Entire Website and in particular Refresh yourself with our Duke's Mission Statement. We are a special Group of Players and People. You need to understand that and Hold yourself up to a higher Accountability that can't just be talk. It has to be put into Action not only for You and when you are on the Field with Duke's but also when you are Home with your Family or out in your School and Community. We have Unbelievable Players, Tremendous Parents, Fantastic Alumni & Adult Players, Dedicated coaches and an Organization that we Hope you can All be very Proud of so Make it Special and Embrace the Opportunities that Duke's Lacrosse provides You.
4) The Website is constantly changing as we Update and Add more Features. We now have Google Ads flashing on the Website that we hope will Generate some small Revenues. Mr. Spahr is adding more Features to make the Bio's and the Whole Website more Dynamic and at some point more Interactive. Look over all all the Links and make sure you Review the Schedule of Events Link Regularly @ .: Duke's Lacrosse Club [ Schedule ] :. especially as we get Active with the Offseason Schedule of Tournaments so you don't miss out on any Opportunities. If you haven't been Invited or attended a Tournament then call and ask what our plans are for you. We don't want to be overly Harsh but more then ever, Duke's High School All-Stars is a very Competitive Program made up of All-Star Caliber People and Players. You are NOT automatically a Duke's Rostered Player if you don't Earn it as a player on the Field and Earn it as a Person off the Field.
5) Duke's is NOT a Funded Program. We basically are a Pay to Play Program . We rely on the Generous Contributions of our Coaching Staff's Time and of what has been Primarily Parents coming thru our Program who Give Donations/Sponsorship because they can and because the Duke's Program has Benefited their Son and Family. Recent generous Contributions from the Clausen's, Lombard's, Castle's, Adolph's & Quercetti's have allowed us to "Keep our Head above water" in meeting the expenses of running the Organization and we thank them whole heartedly. GREAT NEWS !!!!!!!! Recently the Blye Family via Colleen Blye has come forward to Develop an Action Plan that would Set up and Finance the Formation of a Non Profit Tax ID so Contributors can get Tax deductions for their kind Contributions. We will advise once this has been accomplished and in the meantime, please check out the Sponsorship Block on the right side of each Page on the Website. We're really looking forward to that happening !!!!
6) We've had some Coaching changes that need to be Communicated as well. Ron Forster is now with us Full-Time and did a Great job at Champ Camp--Welcome Ron. John Christmas is joining us after an All American Career at Virginia in the National Spotlight. John joins his brother Jason and will be with us Part-Time giving as much time as he can when his Professional Lacrosse Commitments in the Summer with the Boston Cannons in the MLL and hopefully with the Phila.Wings this Winter in the NLL allow. John has also started his Own Company geared to Personal Training and Specialty Offensive Techniques which you can checkout on his Website @ 141lacrosse.com . Some of our guys have already had some Incredible success with him so if you need Individual Offensive Coaching especially with technique, he is the Guy--Welcome John. Tom Slate is leaving Duke's as he continues developing his own Lacrosse Company, Builds a Family, Builds the DT East High School Program and Runs the Annual Governors Cup/Evolution Cup every Summer--Best of Luck Tom.
7) The Current Schedule of Tournaments is still being worked up and we will attempt to finalize ASAP. You can however go to the Schedules Page Link @ .: Duke's Lacrosse Club [ Schedule ] :. and click onto last years 2004-2005 Schedule under History and get a General idea of where we played and might attend this Year. [Wednesday, August 18th- Summer wrap-up] With a lot of people asking, let me get an End of Summer Wrap up Report out on how Duke's HS All stars did at Champ Camp and how Duke's Adult Team did in the Summer Championships.

Sit back and Enjoy the Wrap up but Remember that our Duke's Web site can be accessed with all of our up to date info and it will be particularly important to check as we go forward in establishing our Off season Schedule of Events beginning in late October as well as in following up for Sponsorships, Sponsorship Gifts and Advertising.

Getting back to the Reporting, lets start with Duke's HS All stars who did themselves proud but came up short losing in the National Champ Camp Championship Game at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore , MD. by the score of 6-7. They finished #2 out of 64 Teams Nationally and Cemented their Spot as one of the Elite Club High School Programs in America. The amazing part of their run at Champ Camp was that they had 4 straight games of 1 goal outcomes in the Playoffs and it took its toll on some of the more skilled players who simply ran out of Gas at "Money-time". Duke's started off by winning its Pool Play going 5-0 and in the process handling a Monster team in Texas 8-7 before blowing up a previously undefeated Team in St.Mary's 12-3 to win the Pool by playing their best overall game of the Tournament. Their reward for Winning the Pool was to face what many Coaches thought was the Best Team at Champ Camp and the Favorite to win it all in the Massachusetts Top Gun Team in the 1st Rd. of the playoffs--Round of 16. Duke's Gutted it out in a tight 4-3 Win and in the process had a "Flock" of College Coaches on hand taking notes. Next up was the Round of 8 and there was No break or easy Game to look forward to as Duke's had to meet last years Champ Camp Winner in Advantage Nova and they were not about to give up their Crown without a fight. Duke's Won in another absolute War by a score of 7-6 as last years Champs finally succumbed but they didn't go quietly under the lights on Homewood Field in the feature game of the Tourney. After 2 Draining Games against 2 Teams who easily could have been Champs and expected to be, The following morning in the Round of 4--Semi Duke's Reward was to face Maryland's best Team in the Maryland Fireballs. The Fireballs took advantage of Duke's early as Emotionally Duke's seemed drained by jumping all over them and leading 1-5 into the last Quarter. Duke's however woke up and stormed back to Win in a rain soaked 8-7 OT Game that saw an hour Rain Delay too before Duke's could secure the Big Win that would propel them into the Championship. Once there in the Championship, Duke's got a fellow Pennsylvania Team and jumped all over them quickly and easily by a 4-0 score and then just seemed to breath a sigh of relief as they thought they were playing maybe the easiest Team they had seen in the last 6 games. Unfortunately that letdown and the tiredness of their skilled players they counted on to score/carry them kicked in and they just sagged unable to perform at their normal high level and dropped a Sad 6-7 Game that unfortunately took away from a lot of the hard work they had put in against better teams to get to the Championship. On the Positive side, a lot of players were seen by College coaches. Pennsylvania Lacrosse in general put its Stamp on Lacrosse in this Country as 3 Pennsylvania Teams were in the Final 4 including Springfield with 7 of our Duke's players performing for them including Brian Christopher who had a BIG Tournament and committed to Johns Hopkins while he was down there. Dukes HS All stars had 29 total players who represented 16 area High schools. Kudos go out to the following. They were :
Defensively in Goal, Greg Murray was strong and played with great Athletic Versatility while Mike Haas played well firmly establishing himself as the Duke's goalie of the Future. PT Ricci playing as a D-middie Pumped Everyone up and was outstanding as the "PT Express" or "Sputnik Missile" because of his Blow bye Speed that created many transition opportunities. On Close defense and Long Stick Middie Defense, the Team overall played extremely well with many outstanding contributions but 2 players in particular, Eric Muller and Ken Clausen deserved extra mention because they showed the most Improvement and jumped up exponentially in their abilities over the course of the Tournament. Our Offensive Middies overall struggled mightily but it wasn't for a lack of Effort. Nick Jacobs stepped up as an important Shot maker with his "Rocket" Shot for the 2nd Midline and for the Man up, Andrew Cabry had some timely Goals, Dan DiBona provided some much needed leadership, Sean Evans was a strong option on Face offs and Matt Conaway led all Middie Scoring. Our D-Middies played well and we expect Greg Sampson and Justin Blye to step up Offensively next year after serving their apprenticeship on Defense this Year. Attack was where we really shined this year. Led by Loyola bound Pat Lombard, the leading scorer for Duke's in the Tournament, 80% of scoring was generated by this Group. 9th Grade Stud, Jack Forster was Unbelievable and was the 2nd overall in Scoring while Jake Willcox was solid and 3rd in scoring overall. Greg Casey was 4th overall in scoring and provided some much needed lift with his Lefty shots and Movement. Reed Phillips and Drew Brady rounded out the attack and have to be mentioned because they performed very well and will back with Forster and Casey for the next 2 years so Duke's will come back very strong at Attack for a number of years. Overall a good showing just a disappointing Championship Game.

Duke's will back 15 Players so they'll just be Reloading for another Championship Run.

Turning to Duke's Adult, it was a 2nd consecutive year that this Young Team made a run at the Championship only to lose to a familiar foe in Returning Champ, GMH. Duke's was missing a number of players to Vacation but the Championship Game itself was still a who's who in not only Pennsylvania Lacrosse but also for the National Game of Lacrosse as the caliber of the Players and the Overall Game was Incredible and played at a very high level. Duke's stood tall in the 1st Qtr. leading 3-2 behind scores from Greg Leonard (Loyola) assisted by Andrew Mackrides (Penn State bound), Brett Mooney (Rutgers) from Rick Whelan (Brown), and Bob Schneider (Princeton Bound) unassisted. Drew Adams (Springfield High School) played strong and the Duke's LSM's of Matt Rankin (Maryland Bound), Charley Barnes (VMI), Dave Moore (Loyola), George Castle(John Hopkins Bound), Dan Corcoran (Delaware) and Mike Avato (Springfield High school) also played solid. On close defense, Tom Slate Former All everything anchored the defense but got plenty of help from Greg Avato (Drexel), Matt Hittinger (Salisbury) and Ryne Adolph (Maryland). The 2nd Qtr. was Duke's downfall as GMH went on a 5 goal run fueled by their Face off Domination and the outstanding Defense of former Duke's High School Players and captains in GMH Goalie, TC Behm (Maryland & Loyola) and 2X All American Defenseman Jeff Bigas( Salisbury) who played Lights out. Duke's fought back on the Face offs with Dan Woods (Drexel), Pat Heim (Penn State) and Sean Evans (WC Henderson High school) but it was a losing battle in this turnaround GMH Dominated Quarter. Duke's could only manage a Bob Schneider goal while Denis Whelan (U-Mass) worked his tail off but Duke's trailed 4-7 at the Half. Duke's played even the rest of the way but could never overtake the strong play of GMH who always seemed to have an answer. Greg Leonard added another Goal and an assist while Marty Kupprion (Delaware) and Pat Heim also added goals to make the Final score 7-11. A great effort just not enough.

So, thats a wrap for the Summer.
If anyone has news or other updates to share, please send them to us as we're always looking to Update the Web site which has been a tremendous Upgrade for Duke's Lacrosse overall in getting our Message/Mission Statement out about who we are and Insuring that we get the Best of the Best in Players and their Families because of who they are as People. Take care of yourselves, enjoy the remainder of the Summer and if you get a chance, give your best to Evan Brady and his family as he continues to Fight his Battle.

[Monday, May 31st] Happy Memorial Day to All.
Before I head back to Baltimore for the Nat'l Championship in the rain, I wanted to update everyone with 2 more Add Players to Champ camp. How Fitting on Memorial Day that we get to Celebrate by Adding these 2 Players.
They are senior Middies, Matt Conaway and Rob Shrader.
They both will play OFFENSIVE Middie for us which they've never done at Champ Camp so it not only strengthens our team but gives them the opportunity they've never had which is to showcase their Offensive abilities in the Big Show. Congrats to both of you.
We have 3 or 4 more spots to finalize this week so I will be making both positive and negative calls this week.
- Coach Helm

[Saturday, May 22nd] We are continuing to complete our Champ Camp 2004 Roster. Today, we can announce that both Eric DiProspero and Reed Phillips have accepted Invitations to join Us for Champ Camp. This is very exciting given both players had BIG years as Varsity Players at their respective schools and earned their invitations as 9th graders. Eric is a LSM at Unionville and has had a "Breakout" Season. Reed plays on attack at The Hill School and is extremely talented and a very polished player for his age. So, With the addition of Reed, we are closed out with 6 Attack Players Invited including Capt. Pat Lombard, Jack Forster, Jake Willcox, Greg Casey, Drew Brady & Reed. With the Addition of Eric to run Primarily at LSM with Matt Moyer, we are now down to just 1 add'l Defenseman to be added . The confirmed Close D-Men again are Jef Wittman, Matt Spahr, Glenn Gale, Eric Muller & Ken Clausen.

[Wednesday, May 19th] Please be advised that Invitations have been extended to and accepted by both Drew Brady, 9th Grader at Penncrest and PT Ricci, 11th Grade Longstick at Conestoga for this Summers Champ Camp 2004. Drew will go with us at Attack bringing our total current number of Attack Players to 5 with Pat Lombard, Jack Forster, Jake Willcox and Greg Casey being the other Attack Players confirmed to date. PT will go with us as a D--Short Stick middie. He has blazing speed and we'll look for him to Jumpstart our Transition Game. We'll be filling in the rest of our D-middies shortly as well as adding our D-Longstick Middie to partner with Matt Moyer. We'll be in touch soon about our June Duke's Meeting that will go over Champ Camp, our Summer schedule and Introduce New Players to the Roster.

[Saturday, May 8th] Remember when being interviewed or having a Feature Article done on you as was in the Inquirer Today For Matt Rankin (Congrats Matt) or last week in the Delco Daily Times For Jeff Wittman (Congrats Jeff), please INSIST and make sure to include Duke's Lacrosse Club as BOTH of these Players did so our Name continues to get out into the Lacrosse community. It Promotes Duke's and is our Best form of advertising to young players looking up to and wanting to be on a Club team like Duke's. When you do it, you will be rewarded with a Pizza which will be paid off at Champ camp if you are an Underage Player.

Hopefully you're all enjoying your Spring High School Seasons and having a lot of success. We will be moving forward with a scheduling in the very near future that will include a General Club Meeting of All Rostered Players (Excluding Outgoing Seniors except Captains), Identifying our Summer Schedule, Preparing, Inviting and Finalizing our Champ Roster of Players and Adding new players to the Roster whether it be for Champ Camp or next Year. A couple of things to be aware of are :
1) If you are a Rostered Duke's Player, you should wait until we make our Selections/Invitations to Champ Camp before making any other kind of a commitment to any other Organization except if you are going with your School Team. If you've been invited by another Team then just identify that you need to check with Us FIRST and we'll speed up our decision if you're on the Bubble so you can have the opportunity to enjoy the experience even if its not with Us. Players who's School Team is going to Champ Camp or any other Tournament that interferes with our Schedule of Events need to communicate so there are No Issues. School Teams take Priority and will NEVER be in Conflict with Us but you need to Communicate. 2) Expect Our General Team Meeting to be in Early June with Champ camp specifics, Summer Schedule of tournaments and Practices and Introduction of New/Add Players. 3) Returning Champ Camp Players Invited with Duke's will receive their Champ camp Packet in the next week and are : Goalies:
Greg Murray.
Defense:
Jeff Wittman, Matt Spahr, Glen Gale, Eric Muller and LSM, Matt Moyer.
Attack:
Pat Lombard & Jack Forster.
Middies:
Greg Sih, Mike Liacouras & Rob McCallion.
Add'l Players Invited From our Duke's Roster are :
Goalie:
Kyle Gilfoy.
Defense:
Ken Clausen.
Attack :
Jake Willcox & Greg Casey.
Middies :
Matt Conaway(PG?), Andrew Cabrey & Sean Evans.
As you can see their multiple spots to be filled so be patient and we'll complete our process shortly as we're still evaluating Players and Player performances daily.
